This presentation overviews and discusses the nature and impact of changes in small town populations and economies in recent years in New Zealand and considers the regional development implications of such changes and of recent government policy shifts. The work forms part of a National Science Challenge research investigation.

Both Sean and Etienne have been involved in developing and supervising research papers concerning the economic development of the West Coast and issues concerning our environment. While offering a broader perspective on some of the trends that impact the sustainability and prosperity of small towns nationally/globally the presentation will identify social and economic development trends and local responses which may be relevant for communities on the West Coast.
