The Business Service Team aims to meet the growing needs of the business community, recognizing the positive contribution this sector makes to our local economy. The team provides relevant training, out sourced services, mentoring and wrap around business support.
Business Information Zone (BIZ Info)
The BIZ service has assisted over 258 individuals to find organisations, training and resources to help start and grow businesses. BIZ helps build business capability by providing contacts, referrals and information about relevant government and private sector services and programmes.
www.business.govt.nz is a government business portal designed to make it easier to run your business. It acts as an online business adviser, providing a gateway to business resources.
The site has been primarily designed and written with the needs of small to medium sized enterprises in mind. The BIZ portal website is supported by a freephone, 0800 42 49 46, which links callers to trained business advisors.
Business Health Check

The business health check is a FREE tool to help you identify problems within your business and find solutions for them.
The Business Health Check can be found at http://healthcheck.business.govt.nz/ or by clicking through the links in the www.business.govt.nz website.
The Health Check consists of 50 questions about the current state of a business. Business owners are asked to rank the questions in order of importance in relation to their business. Once a business owner has answered the questions they are presented with a list of the most important actions they should take to improve the health of their business. This list also contains numerous templates, articles, links and best practice suggestions that would be useful to any NZ business owner.
Statistics NZ Business Toolbox
Statistics New Zealand has just released the Business Toolbox, a free suite of online tools that provide quick and easy access to information for businesses. The Business Toolbox contains two tools:
- Market Mapper - businessess can visually pinpoint their target markets using 2006 Census data.
- Industry Profiler - provides details on indusrty performance over time, staff turnover, and survival of simialr-sized businesses.

Business Mentors New Zealand
The New Zealand Business Mentor Programme makes available the skills and experience of people who have proven themselves successful in business. If you employ less than 25 people and your business is more than six months old, you are eligible for a business mentor.
Our mentors are experienced and successful business people who are willing to share their expertise with you to help you and your business grow. Hugh Jones

Hugh Jones is retired and spent his working lifetime in the stock and station industry. During his career he held many management positions and retired as a senior manager of his company responsible for a large number of staff and several different business activities. He has particular experience and expertise in banking, livestock, real estate, insurance, accounting, retailing and staff training and management. Hugh has been mentoring for several years and has assisted a large number of individuals and companies in Canterbury and on the West Coast.

Roger Gowans

Roger is semi-retired, with some business advice interests, and had a long career in the stock and station industry. His experience includes research and development, exports, banking, retailing, real estate, insurance, arable crops, and strategic planning. He held many marketing and senior management roles and was a member of his company's board. Roger has been mentoring in Canterbury and on the West Coast for 3 years.
Roger has been mentoring for several years and has assisted a large number of individuals and companies in Canterbury and on the West Coast.
